About This Product
The Gold Maple Leaf is one of the most established and globally traded 1oz gold bullion coins, produced annually by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1979. It was the first widely available bullion coin to be struck in .9999 fine gold — a higher purity than the American Gold Eagle (.9167) or the South African Krugerrand (.9167) — and remains a benchmark for purity in the gold bullion market.
A "Best Value" Gold Maple is a coin from mixed or unspecified years, sourced from secondary stock or dealer holdings rather than as new mint releases. The gold content, purity, weight, and design are identical to current-year Maples — but because dealers acquire these coins at lower cost than new mint stock, the premium above spot is generally lower. For investors focused on maximising the amount of gold they own per pound spent, Best Value listings are often the most efficient way to buy a 1oz gold coin.
Reverse Design
The reverse of the Gold Maple Leaf displays the Canadian sugar maple leaf, the national emblem of Canada and the design that has remained essentially unchanged since the coin's introduction in 1979. The leaf is finely detailed and centred on the coin, surrounded by the inscriptions CANADA, 9999 (denoting purity), FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR, and the year of issue.
Modern Maples also include a micro-engraved security mark — a small textured maple leaf containing the last two digits of the year of issue, visible only under magnification. Introduced in 2013, this feature is one of the most effective anti-counterfeit measures available on a 1oz bullion coin and contributes to the Maple's strong reputation in the global gold market.
Obverse Design
The obverse of the Gold Maple Leaf features the effigy of the reigning Canadian monarch at the time of striking. Coins from 2023 onwards bear the official Canadian portrait of King Charles III, while earlier years feature one of three portraits of Queen Elizabeth II used across her reign. As Best Value coins are mixed-year, the specific portrait on the coin you receive will depend on its year of issue — though all are produced to the same .9999 fine standard.
The inscription includes the monarch's name, the face value (50 DOLLARS), and the year of mintage. Modern Maples (2013 onwards) also carry a precision-engraved radial line pattern in the field, which produces a subtle light-diffraction effect when the coin is tilted — an anti-counterfeit feature that is difficult to replicate.
