About This Product

The 2027 edition is a particularly significant release in the Britannia programme, commemorating 40 years since the Gold Britannia was first struck in 1987. The Royal Mint has marked the anniversary with two exclusive features that distinguish the 2027 coin from any other year in the series: a '40' background texture incorporated into the wave animation on the reverse, and a dedicated wave privy mark positioned near the base of Britannia. Both features are exclusive to the 2027 release and will not appear on subsequent years.

For investors who build year-sets of Britannias, or who simply want to mark a notable milestone in UK bullion history, the 2027 coin is a one-time opportunity. For those focused purely on gold content, it carries the same .9999 fine gold, same weight, same tax treatment, and same legal tender status as any other year in the series.

Reverse Design

The reverse of the 2027 Gold Britannia features Philip Nathan's 'Standing Britannia' motif, the classic depiction of Britannia that has defined the series since its introduction in 1987. She is shown standing in her traditional pose, holding a trident and olive branch, with the Union-emblazoned shield at her side. Britannia has served as a symbol of the United Kingdom for nearly two millennia, dating back to Roman times, and has featured on British coinage since 1672.

The 2027 edition incorporates 40th anniversary design elements exclusive to this release:

  • A '40' texture worked into the micro-detail wave animation background
  • A wave privy mark positioned at the base of Lady Britannia

Obverse Design

The obverse of the 2027 Gold Britannia features the uncrowned coinage portrait of King Charles III, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings. This definitive portrait was introduced on UK coinage in 2022 following the accession and appears on all Royal Mint bullion coins from that point onwards. Following centuries of British coinage tradition, the King faces left — the opposite direction to his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II.

The inscription reads CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS, denoting the monarch's titles (Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor — "By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith") and the coin's face value.
