Authentication baked into every coin
Royal Mint Full Sovereigns are produced with weight tolerance of ±0.04g per coin — tighter than most LBMA Good Delivery bar specifications. The Royal Mint mixes the 22-carat alloy in-house from refined gold and pure copper, rolls it to 1.52mm thickness, and strikes through hardened collar dies at 22.05mm diameter. The Pistrucci St George reverse is reproduced from master dies maintained continuously since the 1817 original. Every coin leaves the strike line packaged and serialised by date.
Premium over secondary-market Sovereigns
Current-year Royal Mint Full Sovereigns typically command a small premium over secondary-market Sovereigns of similar metal content. The premium reflects condition (fresh-from-mint versus circulated) and packaging, not any difference in metal weight or tax treatment. Investors buying for pure metal exposure often prefer secondary-market stock; those prioritising untouched condition for long-term storage typically pay the small premium for current-year output.
The branch-mint exception
During the imperial period (roughly 1855-1932), Royal Mint authority extended to branch facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Bombay, Ottawa and Pretoria. Branch-mint Fulls carry small mint marks (S, M, P, I, C, SA) and remain UK legal tender for tax purposes — they are Royal Mint output produced at distant locations rather than separate national products. Modern bullion Fulls are exclusively struck at Llantrisant.
Tax position
All Royal Mint Full Sovereigns qualify for VAT exemption (investment gold under HMRC's Sovereign provision) and CGT exemption (UK legal tender). Year of issue and mint location do not affect either treatment.
