Two centuries of continuous Royal Mint production
The Royal Mint has produced Sovereigns continuously since 1817 — initially at the Tower of London, then at Tower Hill, and since 1968 at Llantrisant in South Wales. Branch mints at Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Bombay, Ottawa and Pretoria struck Sovereigns under licence during the imperial period, identifiable by small mint marks; modern bullion Sovereigns are exclusively Llantrisant output.
The Sovereign coin family
The Royal Mint produces Sovereigns in four bullion sizes: Full (7.32g fine gold), Half (3.66g fine), Quarter (1.83g fine) and Quintuple (36.61g fine). All share the 22-carat alloy specification and the Pistrucci St George reverse on bullion issues. Full and Half are the primary stocked formats in the UK market.
