Half Sovereign production specifics

The Royal Mint produces Half Sovereigns at Llantrisant on dedicated Sovereign-series equipment, using the same 22-carat alloy mixed in-house for the Full but struck on smaller blanks. The Half weighs 3.99g overall with 3.66g of pure gold, measures 19.30mm in diameter, and is 1.30mm thick. Weight tolerance is ±0.04g per coin — the same precision standard applied across the Sovereign family.

The 50p face value

The Half Sovereign's 50p face value is nominal rather than economically meaningful at gold prices, but it is what secures UK legal-tender status and the resulting CGT exemption. HMRC's currency exemption from capital gains tax has no minimum face value threshold — a 50p Half receives identical CGT treatment to a £1 Full or a £100 1oz Britannia.

The smaller-commitment angle

At roughly half the price of a Full Sovereign, the Half offers UK investors a smaller per-coin entry into CGT-exempt British gold. Premium per gram is meaningfully higher than the Full — production cost spreads across less metal — but the structural tax advantages are identical. Halves work well for gifting, gradual position-building, and partial-liquidation flexibility where a Full would represent an oversized increment.

The Pistrucci continuity

Modern Royal Mint Half Sovereigns carry the Pistrucci St George reverse continuously from the 1817 original (with brief exceptions for commemorative reverses on specific anniversary issues). The obverse updates with the reigning monarch — Charles III from 2023, Elizabeth II for 1953-2022, and so on back through the imperial period.
