Compare 1oz Silver Britannia Prices

Live 1oz silver Britannia prices from trusted UK dealers, every dealer compared. The 1oz silver Britannia is the UK's principal silver bullion coin and one of the few silver coins anywhere to qualify for UK CGT exemption.

Specifications and history

The 1oz silver Britannia weighs 31.21g overall, contains exactly one troy ounce of pure silver at 999 fineness, measures 38.61mm in diameter, and carries a £2 face value. Production at the Royal Mint's Llantrisant facility has run continuously since 1997, with the alloy specification upgraded from 958 fine (the traditional 'Britannia silver' alloy) to 999 fine in 2013 to align with international bullion standards.

The silver tax picture

Silver investing in the UK contends with 20% VAT on purchase — a charge investment gold avoids — which raises effective entry costs meaningfully. The silver Britannia partially offsets this with a feature most silver products lack: as UK legal tender (£2 face value), it qualifies for CGT exemption on disposal, the same exemption that applies to gold Britannias and Sovereigns. Silver bars of any origin carry the same VAT but never qualify for CGT exemption.

Premium dynamics at 1oz

1oz silver Britannias trade at premiums broadly comparable to other major-mint 1oz silver coins (Eagles, Maples, Kangaroos) in the UK market. Premium per coin is typically higher than 1kg silver bars on a per-gram basis — the standard coin-versus-bar pattern — but resale spreads are tighter and dealer demand is consistently strong.

Anti-counterfeiting features

Silver Britannias from 2021 onwards carry the same integrated security features as gold Britannias: micro-text edge lettering, surface animation under angled light, and radial sunburst lines on the field. These are minted into the coin rather than applied afterwards.
