Britain's answer to the Krugerrand
The gold Britannia launched in 1987 as the UK's first modern bullion coin programme, designed specifically to compete with the Krugerrand and the newly introduced Maple Leaf. Production used a 22-carat alloy until 2012, then transitioned to 9999 fineness in 2013 — aligning the Britannia with Maple Leaves and Kangaroos on purity while retaining its distinctive Nathan reverse design and uniquely British tax position.
The four bullion weights
Gold Britannias are produced in four weights: 1oz (£100 face value, 32.69mm), 1/2oz (£50, 27.00mm), 1/4oz (£25, 22.00mm), and 1/10oz (£10, 16.50mm). All contain exactly their stated troy ounce weight of pure gold at 9999 fineness, with the remaining mass entirely structural.
Security features struck into every coin
From 2021, every gold Britannia carries four integrated anti-counterfeiting features: micro-text spelling 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' around the edge, surface animation that creates a moving wave pattern when tilted under light, latent imaging that switches between Britannia's trident and a padlock symbol depending on viewing angle, and radial sunburst lines on the field. These are part of the strike itself rather than applied afterwards.
The CGT advantage
Every gold Britannia is UK legal tender and qualifies for CGT exemption. This is the structural feature that separates Britannias from foreign 1oz coins of similar metal content. Combined with VAT exemption on investment gold, gold Britannias offer the cleanest tax position available to UK residents on gold coins.
